Just over two thousand years ago. |
Narrator 1 |
There was a little boy standing on a hill. |
Narrator 2 |
Near Bethlehem. His name is Timothy. |
Narrator 1 |
And he was not happy. |
Narrator 2 |
Why? |
Narrator 1 |
Well, sometimes people aren’t. Every morning, he would come to the hill and sing. Listen carefully. |
Narrators exit. |
Music No.2: Song – As The Sun Rises |
Timothy |
As the sun rises, |
Chorus |
As the sun rises, |
Timothy |
What will this day bring me? |
Chorus |
He needs an answer |
Timothy |
What will make me happy? |
Chorus |
He is not happy, he only feels sad. |
Timothy |
As the sun rises, |
Timothy freezes while the Narrators are on. |
Angels enter and take their positions on stage. |
Narrator 3 |
Timothy had a guardian angel. |
Narrator 4 |
That’s cool. Can I have one? |
Narrator 3 |
Ssh! The angel was very worried. |
Narrator 4 |
What about? |
Narrator 3 |
Timothy, of course! |
Narrator 4 |
Oh. |
Narrators exit. |
Timothy is still centre stage, looking glum. |
Guardian |
I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to make Timothy happy. |
Angel 1 |
What did you try? |
Angel 2 |
Well, first he showed Timothy a beautiful sunset and sparkling stars. |
Angel 3 |
Then he tried getting Timothy lots of presents for his birthday. |
Guardian |
I even made him a rainbow! |
Angel 1 |
Well, well. That was a lot. Let me think. Have you tried using his friends? |
Guardian |
I guess we could try. |
Lights up on centre stage. |
Friends and crowd enter. |
Rachel |
Have you heard about the census? |
Timothy |
What’s a census? |
Jacob |
It’s when the Romans count everybody… |
Rachel |
Everybody has to pay to be counted! |
Simon |
That’s a census? It doesn’t make much sense to me. |
Jacob |
Everybody has to go back to where they were born. |
Esther |
Which means our town will be very busy. |
Rachel |
Hey, are you still being sad? |
Jacob |
Cheer up Timothy. We’ll help you. |
Music No.3: Song - The Quest |

At the end of the song, the friends accidentally bump into the Roman Centurions who are entering, shouting ‘left! Right! Left! Right!’. |
Roman 1 |
Hey! What do you think you are doing? |
Esther |
We’re sorry. |
Roman 2 |
So I should hope. We have work to do, little girl. |
Roman 3 |
Move out of our way. |
The friends move and Roman Centurions march on, ordering the crowd out of their way. Friends gather round Timothy. |
Simon |
He didn’t even say please! |
Timothy |
Wow! Those soldiers are powerful! |
Jacob |
Yeah, and grumpy. |
Rachel |
They’ve got a lot of work to do. |
Timothy |
Maybe if I had power like that I would be happy. I would be able to do what I like. |
Esther |
Let’s watch him. |
The remaining Roman Soldiers enter stage to the introduction of the song. |

As the song finishes, the crowd and all Romans exit, leaving the friends alone. |
Jacob |
No wonder they were grumpy. |
Rachel |
I would be too. |
Timothy |
Maybe having power won’t make me happy. |
Simon |
Mum and dad are waiting for me. I have to go. But remember: |
Music No.4a: reprise – The Quest |

There’s no need to be sad, |
Add chorus |
Looking here, |
The friends say goodbye, and they all exit, apart from Timothy. |
Timothy |
So what will make me happy? |
He exits to music. Lights on Angels, across stage. |
Guardian |
Well. That didn’t work, did it? |
Angel 2 |
No, it didn’t. |
Angel 3 |
No, it didn’t. |
Angel 1 |
Just wait and see what happens tomorrow. |
Music No.5: Incidental music No.1 |
Scene Two |
Lights on to Narrators as they enter. Mum and Dad take positions. |
Narrator 5 |
The little boy lived with his mum and dad in the town. |
Narrator 6 |
His dad is an innkeeper. |
Narrator 5 |
People could stay at some rooms upstairs. |
Narrator 6 |
Very useful for when times are busy. |
Narrator 5 |
Which they were then. |
Narrator 6 |
Why? |
Narrator 5 |
Because of the census! |
Narrator 6 |
Oh. |
Narrators exit. Lights come up on Dad and Mum. Timothy enters. |
Mum |
Good morning, Timothy. |
Dad |
We are going on a trip to Jerusalem. |
Mum |
To get some shopping. |
Timothy |
Yeah! Can my friends come? |
Dad |
Only if their parents agree. |
Mum |
Hurry up and get ready then. |
Timothy rushes out as Narrators enter. |
Narrator 7 |
So the little boy got his friends, and they went to Jerusalem. |
Narrator 8 |
How far away is that? |
Narrator 7 |
About five miles. |
Narrator 8 |
Which way? |
Narrator 7 |
North. |
Narrator 8 |
And how long did it take? |
Narrator 7 |
(patiently) About two hours to walk – they didn’t have a car. |
Narrator 8 |
It looks very busy at Jerusalem. |
Narrators exit. Lights up. Dad, Mum and Timothy enter with friends. All other parts are in position for the scene. Dad is talking to a market trader. |
Dad |
I guess that is a fair price. Have you got any wine jugs? |
Trader |
Come, I’ll show you what I have (gestures behind him). |
Timothy |
Dad! I’m bored. Can we go and look at the Temple? |
Dad |
Mum, will you go with them? |
Mum |
Okay. Come on everyone. |
Mum, Timothy and friends cross the stage to the ‘temple’ area. There is a conversation going on between the wise men and some Scribes. |
Scribe 1 |
A king? |
Scribe 2 |
A new king? |
Scribe 3 |
How do you know? |
Wise Man 1 |
We are wise men. |
Wise Man 2 |
We have been following the new King’s star in the East. |
Wise Man 3 |
The star led us here. |
Scribe 1 |
We don’t know anything about a new king. Herod is our king. |
Scribe 2 |
He is a good king too! |
Scribe 3 |
You must be wrong. |
Wise Man 1 |
No. We are not wrong. |
Wise Man 2 |
We have studied hard. |
Wise Man 3 |
We are sure. |
To one side, Mum, Timothy and friends are listening to their conversation. |
Timothy |
Wow! They are so wise. |
Esther |
I wish I knew as much as them. |
Timothy |
Maybe if I was wise I would be happy. Everything would make sense to me. |
Jacob |
I don’t think it works like that. Listen. |
