Scene Four

Front Of Tabs

Dim lighting.

FX:

Thunder & lightning.

Larry & Gary enter Demon, Larry carries an empty sack and Gary carries a large club.

Larry

How much further is it, boss?

Gary

We’ve been walking for hours.

Larry

We were better off working for the Squire!

Gary

He never made us walk miles in the dark!

Demon

Silence, fools! He never made you rich either, did he?

Larry

Can’t we have a rest?

Demon

There’ll be time enough to rest when the job is done. You want your revenge on that goose, don’t you?

Larry & Gary

Yeah we do!

Demon

Good! Now let’s have another practice at capturing the goose. Do you remember what I told you?

Larry

I throw the sack over the goose…

Demon

When I say the word.

Larry

What word?

Demon

Now!

Larry

Well of course, now.

Larry

Well of course, now.

Gary

It’s no good telling him after he’s done it.

Larry

You’ve got to tell me now.

Demon

Now! The word is ‘now’. Now! Now!! Now!!!

Gary

That’s it! I’m off!

Demon

Why?

Larry

Three now’s!

Gary

That’s three gooses.

Larry

You never said there’d be three gooses!

Demon

Geese!

Larry

What?

Demon

It’s three geese, not three gooses!

Larry

Well that’s worse!

Gary

Geese are worse than gooses! We’re off.

Demon

Come back. There’s only one goose and you (points to Larry) throw the sack over it when I say the word.

Larry

Is that now?

Demon

Yes! Now!

Gary

Is that the first ‘now’ or the last ‘now’?

Larry

Or the middle ‘now’?

Demon

There’ll only be one now and that’s when you throw the sack!

Gary

When do I hit it?

Demon

When he nods his head!

Gary

When he nods his head, I hit it?

Larry

When I nod my head, you hit it.

Demon

Right! Now (points to imaginary goose on the ground) there’s the goose. Throw the sack…Now! (Larry throws sack and wrestles imaginary goose) Good! Excellent! (to Gary) Now do you remember what to do?

Gary

Umm?

Demon

(exasperated nods frantically to Larry) When he nods his head! You hit it!

Gary

I hit it?

Demon

You hit it!

Larry nods and Gary hits him over the head. Gary is pleased with himself as Larry staggers about holding his head

Demon

You two are hopeless! Come on! We’re going to be late!

As they exit

Gary

What’s wrong with Larry, boss?

Larry

I don’t feel very well!
